Printable Vellum Stars Tutorial

I was totally inspired by this page Ali Edwards created in this post for her December Daily album and I knew immediately that I would love to scrap lift it.  Except I ran into one little problem...I didn't have any vellum stars.   So I decided to make my own.

Which turned into a bit of a search + find mission:
  • I'll just punch some out of colored vellum - nope
  • I thought I had some colored vellum - nope
  • I thought I had a large star punch - nope
  • I found some large star die cuts - yes!
...so now I just need to figure out how to make some colored vellum

My first thought was to print out large colored blocks onto a vellum sheet.  Which totally would have worked, but then I took it a step further and decided to actually use the shape of a star in my design and print it onto the vellum.   I used the digital star stamps in Canva to create a page of stars in multiple colors that color matched to the papers in the kit.  (If you don't have the star stamps, you can totally find lots of stars under the elements tab in Canva and use that instead of a digital stamp.  Essentially it's the same thing).

I created a new letter sized design in Canva at 8.5"x11".  Then opened up my stamps folder and found the star shape I wanted to use.  I resized it to approx. 1.5" x 1.5" and then repeated the stamp in a line across the page.   I show in the video below the steps to do this quickly in Canva.
Although the colors match perfectly, they look much lighter when printed on the vellum which is the look I wanted to achieve.    I used my paper trimmer to cut the printed vellum into strips.  And then fussy cut some of the stars out by hand.

I debated back and forth on whether to print a color blocked sheet of vellum and use the larger die cut stars I mentioned above, but in the end I decided against adding the larger stars to the pocket.  However, I did find a Fiskars squeeze punch that I've had for a few years now that punches tiny stars.  I decided to use this punch with some plain vellum (scraps from the printed sheet) to create vellum confetti.  I also added a few silver sequin stars to the pocket for a bit of sparkle.   Then sealed the pocket up with my Fuse Tool.  (Other options for sealing the pocket could be to sew it or use washi tape to secure it).

Here's how the finished pocket looks in my album.

In the video below I share how I created the star printable page using Canva as my design tool of choice.  As a tip, the star image does show the resized dimensions in the little box beside the shape so the lines I demo in the video aren't really necessary, but you may find them useful for other projects.
